INSIGHT's unique strengths are the expertise and experience of our professional staff. During the past thirty years, INSIGHT has brought together a group of talented and innovative individuals who complement each other in solving difficult business problems. Mathematicians, computer scientists, logisticians, engineers, systems analysts, and management scientists work together to apply the most advanced technology available in serving our clients.
Dr. Jeffrey Karrenbauer
President and Founding Director
Dr. Karrenbauer has spent over 35 years as an innovator of decision support systems for supply chain professionals worldwide. He applies optimization and simulation to improve complex supply chains, creates efficient databases to support such analyses, and designs intuitive interfaces for these important tools. He also studies shipment planning policies and their impact on supply chain costs, inventory costs, and customer service. He is now advising how to harden supply chains and reduce their vulnerability to acts of nature, or those of an intelligent adversary, as well as merging supply chain design with inventory optimization and transportation procurement.
Dr. Karrenbauer earned his B.B.A. in marketing from the University of Notre Dame and his Ph.D. in business logistics from The Ohio State University. He has published in logistics journals and is a member of the editorial review board of the Journal of Business Logistics. Dr. Karrenbauer is a frequent speaker at professional conferences for logisticians and management scientists, including the Council of Logistics Management Annual Conference and regional roundtables, and the INFORMS Practitioner Conferences. He regularly addresses undergraduate and graduate logistics programs at a number of universities, and contributes to various Executive Development programs.
Dr. Gerald Brown
Director of Technology and Founding Director
Dr. Brown is Distinguished Professor of Operations Research at the Naval Postgraduate School and a Founding Director and Director of Technology of INSIGHT. His contributions to computational techniques in mathematical modeling have received wide recognition. He has had extensive consulting experience with large U.S. corporations and the federal government in the application of state-of-the-art mathematical programming techniques to a wide variety of problems. Dr. Brown has been a finalist for the Edelman Award for the world's best application of management science to business problems three times, 1982, 1986, and 1994 and is a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
Dr. Brown earned his Ph.D. in management from the University of California, Los Angeles. He has published widely in top professional journals on optimization, reliability, military operations research, and management science.
Dr. Richard Powers
Dr. Powers is past President of INSIGHT and a Founding Director (Emeritus). He has more than thirty-five years experience in logistics, information systems, human resource planning, and systems analysis. He earned his Ph.D. in management information systems from the University of Minnesota and an M.B.A. in distribution management from Michigan State University. He is a frequent conference and seminar speaker and has published in the areas of logistics, human resources, management science, and management information systems. In 1990 Dr. Powers served as President of the Council of Logistics Management. The Council recognized Dr. Powers in 1999 with its Distinguished Service Award, the highest honor that can be bestowed upon an individual for achievement in logistics.
Prior to the founding of INSIGHT, Dr. Powers worked for the Department of Defense on the largest distribution system study ever undertaken. He also served as an advisor to the Secretary of Defense on defense manpower policies and programs. In addition to his INSIGHT duties, Dr. Powers has taught in the graduate management programs of several universities in the Washington, D.C. area.
Dr. Arthur Geoffrion
Dr. Geoffrion is James A. Collins Professor of Management Science at UCLA's Anderson Graduate School of Management and a Founding Director (Emeritus) of INSIGHT. He earned his Ph.D. in operations research from Stanford University.
Dr. Geoffrion's professional career comprises four streams of effort: (1) conducting basic research into the foundations of optimization and model design; (2) pioneering practical applications of new management science techniques to problems of distribution, production, and finance; and (3) developing new foundations for computer-based modeling environments, and (4) exploring the implications of the Internet and digital economy for management and management science. These efforts have resulted in approximately sixty publications and numerous lectures and seminars around the world. He has also been active as an editor for several journals and in the affairs of professional societies. He has served as the President of TIMS and of INFORMS, both international societies dedicated to the advancement of management science. His work in the area of distribution planning has received national and international honors. He is a fellow of the International Academy of Management and a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
Director of Product Management
Dan is the Director of Product Management. His areas of special interest include the development and application of state-of-the-art, easy-to-use management support systems based on network, linear, integer, and non-linear optimization. He has done extensive work with user-friendly graphics interfaces for logistics models, and has particular expertise and experience in transportation optimization systems.
Dan earned his M.S. in Operations Research from the Naval Postgraduate School and has presented his work on optimization at conferences for logisticians and management scientists.
